A 16-year-old junior at Canyon High School in Canyon Country was arrested after stabbing another student, authorities said.

Pat Butterfield, 16, of Canyon Country was in fair condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital after he was stabbed in the chest and the hand about 4 p.m. Friday, nursing supervisor Rose Morelli said.

Butterfield’s assailant was being held at Sylmar Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder, said Sgt. Mike Morton of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Butterfield apparently got into a fight with the other 16-year-old at a fast-food restaurant near campus during their lunch period Friday.

After school the assailant and two other youths surrounded Butterfield as he waited for a ride home, Morton said.

The 16-year-old stabbed Butterfield twice while the other youths struck him with a stick and fists, Morton said. The youth who stabbed Butterfield was arrested at home by deputies.

“The stabber may have some gang affiliation, but we’re not sure,” Morton said. Butterfield was not believed to be a gang member, he said.
