A Santa Monica convenience store clerk was killed and a co-worker wounded in a robbery that led to the fatal shooting by police of one suspect and the wounding of another, authorities said Sunday.

The incident began just before noon Saturday at a 7-Eleven store on Santa Monica Boulevard at 16th Street, said Sgt. Gary Gallinot of the Santa Monica Police Department. He said police responded to a robbery call and were confronted by a gunman leaving the store.

“The officers ordered him to drop the gun, but he turned and pointed the gun at them,” Gallinot said. “An officer fired and killed him.”

Two other suspects ran out of the store and fired at the officers, who chased them, he said.

One suspect was shot during the chase, Gallinot said, and the third was captured.

Inside the store, officers found a clerk dead and another wounded in the back. The injured clerk was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. The names of the clerks were not released.

Police said the dead and wounded suspects were minors.

The third suspect was identified as Ray John Dailey, 21. He was being held on suspicion of murder, Gallinot said.
