Proposal for New Airport Job to Get Closer Look

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday decided to take a closer look at a proposal to create a $112,000-a-year executive post in the Department of Airports in the midst of a citywide financial crisis.

“I feel it’s important for the council to share in the future direction of institutions as important as the airport,” said Councilwoman Ruth Galanter.

The position was approved last month by the Airport Commission. The appointee would be responsible for public relations, legislative analysis, noise abatement and environmental management, as well as planning issues. The position is “in the best interests of community and public,” said Robert Chick, president of the Airport Commission.

Council members said they were most concerned that the position seems to be earmarked for Philip Depoian, a longtime aide to Mayor Tom Bradley.
