ROUNDUP : Hill’s Triple-Double Lifts North Hollywood Over Sylmar, 111-28

Senior guard Robert Hill recorded a triple-double for North Hollywood High and three of his teammates scored in double figures Thursday as the Huskies crushed Sylmar, 111-28, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference boys’ basketball game at North Hollywood.

Hill had 24 points, 11 assists and 10 steals as North Hollywood (7-1, 3-0 in conference play) won its third game in a row.

Sylmar (1-5, 1-3) upset Canoga Park, 52-51, on Tuesday, but the Spartans were blown out early by the Huskies, trailing, 21-9, after the first quarter, and, 54-14, at halftime.

DeShawn Harvey had 18 points for North Hollywood and teammates Damon Ollie and Jamaal Johnson added 14 and 13 points. Deon Price led Sylmar with nine points.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Grant 59, Poly 58 (OT)--Grant’s Chris Fields sank two free throws with no time on the clock to send the game into overtime, then Wayne Carlisle scored all six of Grant’s points in the extra session in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly.

With a chance to tie in overtime, Poly’s Juan DeLuna (14 points) missed the back end of a one-and-one situation with two seconds remaining.

Kirk Deffenbaugh added 14 points for Poly (1-4, 0-3) and Carlisle scored a game-high 25 points for Grant (4-1, 3-1).

Sherman Oaks CES 73, Monroe 59--Neil Spaulding scored 18 points for host Monroe (2-3, 2-2) in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Chatsworth 58, Canoga Park 50--Brady Mertes had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Chancellors (4-1) in a quarterfinal game of the L. A. Invitational tournament at Pierce College.

Chris Dunbar scored 16 points for Chatsworth and Glenn Davis had 22 points for Canoga Park (1-5).

L.A. Baptist 53, St. Bonaventure 39--Matt Kilanowski scored 10 points and had 13 rebounds and teammate Mark Heerema added 12 points to lead L.A. Baptist into the consolation semifinals of the Fillmore tournament.

Birmingham 49, Van Nuys 31--Carlos Avelar scored a game-high 15 points to lead host Birmingham (2-3, 2-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Greg Whiteside added 13 for Birmingham.

Banning 55, Quartz Hill 42--Ryan Beckstead and Dan Prince each scored 11 points for Quartz Hill (3-3) in a first-round game of the Apple Valley tournament.

Boulder City (Nev.) 63, Providence 50--Barry Dabbaghian scored 15 points and Hagop Yaglian added 14 for Providence (2-2) in the first round of the Parker (Ariz.) tournament.

Joe Ungos scored 10 points for Providence, which meets Yuma tonight in a consolation game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 95, Mira Costa 90--Reggie Bell scored a team-high 20 points and three other players scored in double figures to lead the Cougars in the first round of the Midstate tournament at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

Former Crespi High standout Rasaan Hall had 18 points for Canyons (7-2). Marquis Wilborn added 17 points and David Langley had 16 for Canyons, which scored 56 points in the second half after being tied, 39-39, at intermission.

Moorpark 62, Ohlone 55--Moorpark guard Damian Wilson scored a game-high 31 points, including two three-point shots, to lead the Raiders in the first round of the Midstate tournament.

Moorpark (3-7), which made three of seven three-point shots, overcame a 9-2 deficit. Matt Weaver scored eight points and had 10 rebounds, and Sean Doyle had 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Chris Loydhal scored 16 points to lead Ohlone (1-9).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Thousand Oaks 84, Dana Hills 48--Michelle Palmisano and Marion Jones combined for 51 points to lead the Lancers past Dana Hills and into the championship game of the Santa Ana Valley tournament.

Palmisano, a senior guard, scored 26 and Jones, a junior forward, added 25. Lisa Gillette and Sasha Scardino each added nine points for Thousand Oaks (2-0).

Palmdale 42, St. Bernard 37--Palmdale took an 18-9 halftime lead and held off a second-half charge by St. Bernard, the defending Southern Section Division 3-AA champion, to advance to the semifinals of the Brea tournament.

Latisha Beam (14 points, nine rebounds), Kim Shielke (12 points, five assists) and Aimee Grimes (10 points, nine rebounds) led Palmdale (5-0), which meets Gahr tonight.

Burroughs 49, Notre Dame 41----Jeanie Russell scored 22 points and Maggie Hause added eight to lead host Burroughs (3-2) to a nonleague victory.

Grant 47, Poly 34--Senior forward Nicole Baynes scored 20 points and added 12 rebounds for host Grant (3-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

North Hollywood 57, Sylmar 31--Suzi Shimoyama scored 15 points for North Hollywood (5-1, 3-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Shantye Morgan had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Sylmar (1-4, 1-3).

Hardy (Saskatchewan) 70, Chaminade 69--Maria Costa scored 26 points for Chaminade (7-1) in a first-round loss in the Jasper tournament in Edmonton, Canada.

Chaminade had possession of the ball in the final seconds but committed a turnover.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 90, Mt. San Jacinto 37--Center Ytteb Bowls scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds for Ventura in a first-round game at the Canyons tournament.

Guard Cori Herman scored 20 points and forward Toschia Ruffin added 12 points and nine rebounds for Ventura (8-1).

MiraCosta 60, Glendale 57--A late Glendale rally came up short in a nonconference game at MiraCosta. Stephanie Balle led Glendale (3-5) with 18 points.

Denise DalPonte had 13 points and Lisa Bjornberg added 10.

California Baptist 83, The Master’s 43--Tracie Hildre (18 points) and Demetria Dixon (17) led California Baptist (5-2) in a nonconference game at Master’s.

Diane Childs scored 18 points to lead Master’s (0-6).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Alemany 0, Cerritos 0--Michelle Aasen and Jodie Smyers split time in the Alemany goal as the host Indians (3-0-1) fought highly regarded Cerritos to a nonleague draw and remained unscored on for the season.

Burroughs 4, La Canada 0--Host Burroughs improved to 4-0 with the nonleague victory.
