The San Diego chapter of the American Cancer Society announced Wednesday that it is giving $1 million to scientists from local research facilities.
The 10 recipients come from the La Jolla Cancer Research Center, Medical Biology Institute, Salk Institute, Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and UC San Diego.
The American Cancer Society, the largest private supporter of cancer research in the United States, has given a total of $6.2 million, including the latest donations, to San Diego researchers over the years.
The grants announced Wednesday include: $319,000 to Carol L. Macleod of UCSD to analyze a novel gene; $270,000 to Michael Karin of UCSD to investigate the biochemical basis of cancer cells; $225,000 to Inder M. Verma of the Salk Institute to pursue the molecular analysis of cancer cells, and $205,000 to David A. Cheresh of Scripps Clinic to study melanoma tumor cells.
