BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Falletta Leads Troy Past Century

Troy High School’s Jim Falletta scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Warriors to a 49-45 victory over Century in the championship game of the Sonora tournament Friday night at Sonora High School.

Falletta broke a 45-45 tie with a 17-foot jump shot with 39 seconds left to go and then scored a layup off a Century turnover with 26 seconds left for the final margin.

“He’s tough and he’s a senior and one of his goals was to win this tournament,” Troy Coach T.J. Hardeman said. “He said, ‘Give me the ball and we’ll win.’ ” Troy is 5-3.

Century (6-2) played without two starters, forwards Darvin Thompson and Thomas Harmon, who were sidelined with the flu. “Our forte is defense and we held them to 48 points,” Century Coach Greg Coombs said. “They had a lot of offensive rebounds and they put them back in. Falletta made some nice shots with our guys right in his face.”

Century was led by guard George Barragan with 14 points.

In other Sonora tournament games:

Santiago 51, Costa Mesa 41--Juan Soriano scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds as Santiago (4-2) won the third-place game. Santiago led, 22-14, at the half and, 38-20, after three quarters.

Whittier Christian 70, Sonora 67--Mark Berekoff scored 30 points for Whittier Christian (3-3) in the consolation championship. Whittier Christian outscored Sonora, 28-13, in the third quarter to take a 58-38 lead.
