Tree Recycling Program

Compiled by Times researcher Cecilia Rasmussen

Los Angeles officials want your used Christmas tree for recycling into wood chips for mulch or compost material as a means of saving landfill space and resources.

It takes nature nine years to do what composting can achieve in 90 days.

Trees will be collected at curbside from residents served by the city’s automated refuse-collection service. Collections will be made from next Monday to Jan. 4 (except on New Year’s Day), and Jan. 6 to Jan. 10.

Trees also may be dropped off between Saturday and Jan. 4 (except on New Year’s Day) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations, where those who take part will receive two coupons for a four-quart bag of potting soil.
