NEW RELEASES : In Brief

* * * Jackie and Rene McLean, “Rites of Passage,” Triloka. Altoist McLean and his scion Rene, who is spotlighted on tenor and soprano, deliver these 10 vibrant, modern mainstream compositions with considerable gusto. The elder McLean is still one of the most telling soloists in jazz: His improvisations bubble with life. Rene McLean, while not his father’s equal--few jazzman are--reveals a facile imagination and good technique. His tenor sax work is particularly effective.

New albums are rated on a scale o one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
