Man, 74, Found Shot to Death in His Home
The body of a man who had been shot in the head was found Thursday in a chair in his living room, and police are investigating it as a homicide.
John E. Haggard, 74, was discovered at 11:57 a.m. in his home at 122 Avenida del Poniente, Lt. Bill Trudeau said.
Trudeau said that there was no sign of burglary and that no gun was found. Investigators said neighbors reported hearing gunshots but could provide no further leads.
Steve Riley, a neighbor for 20 years, said Haggard’s wife was on a trip to Nevada and tried calling the house but could not reach her husband. She then sent her sister to check.
Riley said Haggard’s front door was not locked when he and Haggard’s sister-in-law found the body.
Riley said his neighbor was retired. He last saw him on New Year’s Day.
“We had beers and swapped lies and told stories,” Riley said. His friend “loved a good joke,” he said.
An autopsy is pending.
