Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, beaten in the second round of qualifying, upset top-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Danone Queensland Open at Brisbane, Australia. Temesvari, who lost to Eva Pfaff of Germany in qualifying, gained a place in the main draw when Natalia Medvedeva of Ukraine was unable to get a flight to Australia. Debbie Graham of Fountain Valley also advanced, upsetting third-seeded Sabine Appelmans, 6-2, 6-2.
