PREP ROUNDUP : No. 4 El Modena Romps Past Irvine in Wrestling

El Modena, ranked No. 4 in Orange County, failed to win only three of 13 matches to defeat Irvine, 46-14, in a nonleague wrestling match Thursday at Cal State Fullerton.

The Vanguards pinned six of their opponents and won four by decision, while Irvine wrestlers pinned only one El Modena foe.

Two Vanguard wrestlers shut out their opponents. Barry Mohn triumphed over Dustin Charest, 5-0, at 119 pounds, and CIF qualifier Bill Gibson won, 9-0, over Geoff Flint at 189 pounds.

But the biggest margin came from El Modena’s Josh Smith, who scored on several reversals and defeated Chris Kiya, 18-5, at 171 pounds.

In a 160-pound match between an El Modena senior and an Irvine freshman, Vanguard Matt Molsberry pinned Steve Ruiz, after 1 minute 27 seconds.

Loc Pham, who accomplished Irvine’s pin, was named the Vaqueros’ outstanding wrestler for the night. Pham, who had the fastest takedown of either team, stopped Rudy Friend with 4:57 to go at 112 pounds.

Irvine got a victory from Ruben Gonzalez, another CIF qualifier, who beat Ryan Hughes, 12-6, in the 152-pound division.

El Modena’s Josh Wagner and Irvine’s Sean Billings wrestled to a 2-2 tie at 103 pounds.
