Point Loma Nazarene Defeats William Jewell

Pushed to the buzzer, Point Loma Nazarene managed an 81-78 victory over William Jewell College on Thursday in the first round of the Crusader Classic men’s basketball tournament at PLNC’s Golden Gymnasium.

All five Crusader starters scored in double figures, accounting for all but six points.

Mark Bulgin’s 22 points led the way. Donnie Buettner had 18 points and eight rebounds. Rusty Fallin added 13 and Frank Dews 11.

Guard Sean Giles scored 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds and five assists.

William Jewell (8-7) was led by forward Chris Trout with 27 points and nine rebounds.

PLNC (7-6) led at halftime, 36-32.

George Fox College (Ore.) defeated Southern Nazarene University, 82-72, in a first-round game. Center Dave Wilson scored 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting for George Fox (8-5). Wilson’s counterpart, Wade Wienstroer, had 29 for Southern Nazarene (5-11).

PLNC plays Southern Nazarene tonight at 7:30 in the second round of the round-robin three-day draw. George Fox plays William Jewell at 5:30.

FOOTBALL

Scott Brownholtz, a 1990 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School who played at Fresno City College the past two seasons, has signed a national letter of intent to play for at Georgia. Brownholtz (6-3, 275), a center and long snapper, was voted team captain by the Rams and was a third-team junior college All-American. He chose Georgia over Alabama, Arizona and Oklahoma.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Despite a game-high 16 points points by center Lisa Beaver, UC San Diego lost a nonconference game at Christ College Irvine, 72-61. Cari Young added 13 for the Tritons, who fell to 6-5. Stacy Kirch finished with 15 points as the Eagles (11-2) won their sixth consecutive game.
