Virginia Guard Staley Is Named Top Female Athlete Among Collegians
Dawn Staley, a senior guard for the University of Virginia, was named the winner of the 15th annual Broderick Cup at the Honda Awards dinner Thursday at the Anaheim Hilton.
The award honors the top female collegiate athlete of the 1990-91 season.
Staley, a consensus player of the year, led Virginia to the NCAA championship game, which the Cavaliers lost in overtime to Tennessee. She was named the MVP of the Final Four and holds six school records.
She was selected from a group of 11 nominees. Staley was a childhood friend of Hank Gathers and also gained notoriety when she talked another student out of committing suicide and off a ledge. That student attends all of Virginia’s games and is a top booster.
