Can’t Lawmakers Find Real Issues?

Share

I thought your article about Orange County Assemblyman Mickey Conroy (“Snack Tax Foes Announce Start of Repeal Drive,” Dec. 17) working to pass an initiative on the ballot to repeal the sales tax on snack foods was a perfect example of the caliber of leadership we have sadly come to expect from our elected representatives.

It upsets me just to think of all the hours, dollars and other resources that will be squandered on this very minor issue when there are very major problems confronting all of us at this time.

Instead of focusing on why there are large numbers of poor or why they spend what little money they have on nutritionally poor snack foods, Mr. Conroy wants to focus the efforts of hundreds of people on making sure that any poor person who is desperate to buy “graham crackers shaped like a teddy bear” will receive an 8.25% discount.
