Cordero, Velazquez Hurt in Four-Horse N.Y. Spill

Jockey Angel Cordero suffered a broken right arm when he was thrown from his mount in a four-horse spill during Sunday’s second race at Aqueduct.

Cordero and jockey John Velazquez were in the intensive-care unit at Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center on Sunday night. Jockeys Jorge Chavez and Jean-Luc Samyn suffered minor injuries.

Deal Rowdy, a 3-year-old gelding, broke down under Velazquez and was humanely destroyed after the incident. The three horses that survived the mishap suffered minor injuries.

In the feature race, Thunder Rumble came from off the pace to win the $90,600 feature for 3-year-olds, the Montauk Stakes. Prioritizor was second in the 10-horse field, two lengths ahead of Jay Gee.

The victory was the second in three career starts for Konrad O. Widmer’s Thunder Rumble, who covered 1 1/16 miles on the fast track in 1:46 4/5 to earn $54,360. Thunder Rumble returned $6.60, $4.40 and $3.60 as part of the favored entry with Lubnan.
