From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Bail was set at $1 million for a New Jersey doctor accused of chloroforming his traveling companion, who died of chemical intoxication. Prosecutors say Dr. Sam Dubria administered chloroform to 20-year-old Jennifer Klapper so he could have sex with her, but the young woman died in a Carlsbad motel room. Klapper’s family said the woman, who worked in the Cincinnati hospital where Dubria was an intern, had agreed to travel to California, but had made it clear that it was not a sexual relationship. Dubria said he found her lying unresponsive on the motel room floor, and called 911 when he could not revive her. Prosecutors believe that Dubria knocked Klapper out with chloroform, raped her, then found she wouldn’t regain consciousness. The San Diego County medical examiner’s office concluded that Klapper, who had scratches on her neck and whose pants were on inside out, died of chloroform intoxication.
