A 27-year-old Oxnard man was killed in a 60-m.p.h. near head-on crash when he apparently ran a red light and slammed into another car, California Highway Patrol officers said Wednesday.

Juan Alfaro was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura and died a short time later, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Barbara Barboza, the driver of the second car involved in the collision, was taken to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura with moderate injuries, CHP Officer Jim Utter said.

A Community Memorial spokeswoman said the 32-year-old Oxnard woman was in stable condition after surgery.

The 7:24 a.m. crash occurred on Victoria Avenue, south of Olivas Park Drive, Utter said.

The Mendota man, traveling east on Olivas Park Drive, apparently ran a red light at the Victoria Avenue intersection, Utter said.

The man’s car veered onto the right shoulder, struck a sign and careened across the southbound lane of Victoria, Utter said.

At that point, his car jumped the center divider and struck Barboza’s, which was traveling north about 50 m.p.h., Utter said.

The crash held up traffic for about 45 minutes, he said.
