Arizona Starts Another Streak by Routing Arizona State, 92-55
Arizona unleashed a fierce defense, triggered by reserves Deron Johnson and Damon Stoudamire, to trounce Arizona State, 92-55, Wednesday night in the 11th-ranked Wildcats’ first home game since having a 71-game home-court winning streak ended by UCLA.
Sean Rooks scored 18 points, Johnson added 16, Chris Mills had 15 and Stoudamire scored 10 for Arizona, 12-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pacific 10.
Arizona State (11-6, 2-3) lost its 11th consecutive game to Arizona and its ninth in a row at the McKale Center.
Arizona has beaten Arizona State 17 times in 18 games.
Arizona trailed, 15-10, with 12:21 left in the half but went on a 12-2 run and never looked back.
The Sun Devils’ last lead was at 17-16 on Lynn Collins’ tip-in with 9:28 remaining. Arizona outscored them 27-4 the rest of the half for a 43-21 halftime lead.
The Wildcats forced 24 turnovers and the Sun Devils shot only 30% in the first half and 38.2% for the game. Arizona hit 19 of 26 first-half shots (73.1%) and 60% for the night.
Stevin Smith had 16 points for Arizona State.
