Mitch McDowell, Singer Turned Bail Bondsman, Is Slain
Former singer Mitch McDowell of the funk group General Kane and a teen-age nephew were shot to death during a robbery at their bail bond business, authorities said Thursday.
“We don’t know if it was personal, professional or just a spur of the moment deal,” Detective Vince Kutch said. Details about the slayings, including the type of weapon used, were not disclosed.
McDowell, 37, and Akili John Davis, 18, were found dead early Wednesday by a homeless man looking for a place to sleep. Investigators said the business had been ransacked and the safe was empty.
McDowell, who lived in nearby Rialto, opened the bail bond business in April, 1990, after the singing group disbanded.
The group, which recorded for Motown Records in the mid-1980s, had previously used the name General Caine.
