SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : Kickoff for the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl XXVI pregame show begins at 12:30 p.m., game coverage starts at 3 p.m. and the kickoff is scheduled for 3:18 p.m. Sunday on CBS, Channels 2 and 8.

Enough said.

The weekend sports television viewing choices also include the usual mix of NBA and collegiate basketball, the NHL, golf’s Senior Skins Game and the men’s finals of tennis’ first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Golf: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Lee Trevino tee off in the Senior Skins game, today at 3:30 p.m. on Channels 7, 3 and 42 (2:30 p.m. on KGTV Channel 10) and 12:30 p.m. Sunday on all four ABC stations.

Pro Basketball: In his first NBA coaching assignment in Los Angeles since leaving the Lakers, Pat Riley brings the New York Knicks into the Sports Arena to face the Clippers at 7:30 p.m. on KCOP Channel 13. Two of the league’s best players, Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, will be on the court when the Chicago Bulls play the Houston Rockets at 5:30 p.m. on WGN. The Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics meet at 9:30 a.m. Sunday on Channels 4, 36 and 39.

College Basketball: No. 2 UCLA visits Stanford at 3 p.m. today on Channels 2 and 63, and No. 1 Duke is host to Wake Forest at 11 a.m. on Channels 2 and 8, for those fans hoping to compare the two teams who will meet March 1. In today’s other telecasts involving teams in the Associated Press Top 25, No. 18 Georgia Tech takes on No. 20 Louisville at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN, No. 22 St. John’s challenges No. 13 Syracuse at 1 p.m. on Channels 2 and 8, and No. 10 North Carolina plays host to Virginia at 1 p.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39. Sunday, No. 6 Ohio State heads east to face Seton Hall at 9 a.m. on Channels 2 and 8.

Other Sports: In a rematch of the U.S. Open final, top-seeded Stefan Edberg seeks his third Australian Open championship at 7 tonight on ESPN. Second-seeded Jim Courier, who lost to Edberg in the U.S. Open, provides the opposition. In hockey, the Kings return home after a two-game trip to face the Calgary Flames at 7:30 tonight on Prime Ticket.
