COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Romps in Its First Game in Division I

Chapman, playing its first baseball game as a Division I team, defeated St. Mary’s, 11-4, in a nonconference game Friday at Moraga, Calif.

Kevin Cook, Cliff Anderson, and Larry Stahlhoefer homered for visiting Chapman (1-0). Pete Coleman pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, and three hits while striking out six to earn the victory.

Chapman took advantage of St. Mary’s wild pitching (seven hit batsmen) and poor fielding (seven errors) to break a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning.

In another nonconference baseball game:

UC Riverside 8, UC Irvine 1--Chad Townsend went three for five with four runs batted in for host UC Riverside, in its season opener. Daron Kirkreit (1-0) earned the victory, going seven innings with seven strikeouts while allowing one run and one hit.

Corey Parker had two hits for UC Irvine (1-1).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Texas Christian 8, UC Irvine 1--Brett Hansen-Dent defeated Tony Bujan, ranked 16th on the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), but the 21st-ranked Anteaters (1-1) lost the other eight matches to the sixth-ranked Horned Frogs (2-0) at Miami.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, Cal State Los Angeles 4--Andrew Bretherton and Rob Stoops each won a singles match and teamed for the decisive doubles victory for the visiting Panthers (2-0, 1-0).

Uwe Olivella and Aris Vassiliou also won singles matches for Chapman.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 9, Cal State Northridge 0--The Anteaters (1-1) dropped just one set as Coach Doreen Irish won the 300th match of her 19-year career, all of which she has spent at Irvine.

In nonconference women’s gymnastics:

Arizona State 188.95, Cal State Fullerton 183.25--Titan freshman Wendy Minch was third in the all-around as visiting Fullerton dropped to 2-2. Arizona State (3-2) swept the individual events, with Donna Lister winning both the uneven bars and balance beam.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 62, Chapman 57--Vern Broadnax scored a game-high 20 points for the visiting Panthers (6-13, 1-6) who trailed 56-34 with six minutes, 41 seconds left.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Chapman 50, Cal State San Bernardino 49--Julie King scored 20 points for the Panthers.
