Golden West, stunned by a last-second shot at the end of the first half Saturday, made sure another wouldn’t matter by the end of the game with a 95-84 victory over Fullerton in Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball.

Fullerton’s Rod Summers made a three-pointer with one second left in the half to put the Hornets up, 41-34, but Golden West raced back with a 61-43 second half.

Sophomore guard Paig Parish started the rally, making his first four shots and finishing the half with 21 of his team-high 23 points.

Golden West made its first seven shots as part of a 24-7 run after halftime and led, 58-48, after a three-pointer by Parish off a pass from Greg Evans with 13 minutes 54 seconds left.

One reason for Golden West’s run was that Fullerton’s Bob Terry and Garry Hunter, the Hornets’ leading scorers, were on the bench because of foul problems.

Both returned after Parish’s shot. Terry had a pair of three-pointers, and Hunter had two three-point plays to help Fullerton get close.

Greg Williams drew the Hornets within 71-69 with 6:30 left, but Golden West pulled away again, making 12 of its final 14 free throws to prevent a Fullerton comeback.

Golden West (13-15, 4-4) had made only four of 14 free-throw attempts in the first half, but made 17 of 23 in the second half.

Scott Campbell, who made 11 of 12 free throws, and Mark Johnson had 19 points each for Golden West. Evans added 18.
