Share

The Cal Lutheran baseball team unveiled its 1992 baseball team against Christ College on Saturday, and based on first impressions, the outlook for the Kingsmen is bright. The offense? Potent. Pitching and defense? Stingy.

Cal Lutheran won the first game, 11-2, and right-hander Steve Dempsey led the Kingsmen to a 10-0 victory in the second against a team that opened its season last week by defeating nationally ranked Cal State Northridge.

Dempsey faced 29 batters, allowed just four singles and had no walks.

In the second game, Bob Farber, Cal Lutheran’s right fielder, hit a double in the second inning and Jim Fifer followed it with a home run.

Cal Lutheran never slowed, and hit four consecutive singles in the seventh inning to score four runs.

Eric Johnson, a transfer from Northridge, had four hits in five at-bats and the Kingsmen finished the game with 15 hits, including three doubles and two home runs.

Christ College right-hander Mike Adams, who defeated Northridge, was ineffective in the first game, allowing 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Cal Lutheran pulled away in a five-run sixth inning in the first game. Christ College (4-2) managed only four hits, three off Cal Lutheran starter Mike Winslow and one off reliever Pat Norville, who entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth and recorded the save.

Cal Lutheran had six home runs during the day, including two by center fielder Darrell McMillin and two by Fifer.
