Skier Doug Lewis, who earned a bronze medal in the downhill at the 1985 World Alpine Ski Championships in Bormio, Italy, and has since retired, was the first forerunner for both the men’s regular downhill Sunday and the combined downhill Monday at Val d’Isere.

AJ Kitt of the United States, sympathizing with the plight of Switzerland’s Franz Heinzer in Sunday’s race, said: “The course was not good for the classic downhillers. Heinzer is far and away the best in the world right now. He’s on another level from the rest of us. But he could only finish sixth on the Bellevarde course. It’s really unfortunate.”

Hilary Lindh of Juneau, Alaska, had the fifth-fastest time in the first and second training runs for the women’s downhill at Meribel.

Lindh was 2.30 seconds behind Svetlana Gladishiva of the Unified Team, who led the first run with a time of 1:49.99, then was 0.66 of a second behind Germany’s Miriam Vogt, who topped the second run on a shorter course in 1:27.32.

Edith Thys of Squaw Valley was eighth and Krista Schmidinger of Lee, Mass., ninth in the second run, trailing Vogt by 0.95 and 1.11, respectively.

The women’s downhill is scheduled Saturday at Meribel.
