Don August, an NCAA Division II All-American for Chapman in 1984, signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants in December after spending most of last season as a starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers.
August, 28, has a 34-30 record in three-plus major league seasons. He had his best season as a rookie in 1988, finishing 13-7 with a 3.09 earned-run average. He finished fourth in the American League rookie of the year balloting.
Last season, August was 9-8 with a 5.47 ERA. He was sent down to the Brewers’ triple-A team after the season but decided to become a free agent.
A 1981 graduate of Capistrano Valley, August was the only Division II player on the 1984 U.S. Olympic team and was the Houston Astros’ No. 1 pick in the 1984 draft.
