Anaheim Chief Says FBI Pledge to Help City Fight Gangs Is ‘Amusing’

Describing as “amusing” the FBI’s recent pledge to devote more agents to Southern California’s gang wars, Police Chief Joseph T. Molloy said Tuesday that federal authorities--untrained in the violent ways of local streets--may be little help to city police.

“The bottom line is that these guys don’t have experience in working with gang-bangers,” Molloy said at a City Hall news conference. “I welcome their help, but I’m not going to teach FBI guys how to work our streets. There isn’t time.”

Molloy’s remarks came after announcing the formation of a 20-member task force to develop an anti-gang and -drug strategy for the city.

Last week, FBI officials said they had reassigned 22 agents in Southern California to work exclusively on anti-gang investigations. At that time, federal authorities said they would be meeting with local law enforcement agencies and community groups to determine how best to deploy their agents.
