David Cone, a right-handed pitcher for the New York Mets, was awarded a record $4.25 million in arbitration, just as Texas outfielder Ruben Sierra prepared to argue his case for a $5-million request. Arbitrator Nicholas Zumas picked Cone’s figure over the Mets’ $3-million offer. Cone was 14-14 with a 3.29 earned-run average in 1991 and made $2.35 million.
