South Gate : Bids Sought for Renovation Work at Civic Auditorium

Share

The City Council has called for bids to renovate the South Gate Municipal Auditorium, which has been closed since September because of structural problems. The work, scheduled for completion in September, includes upgrading seismic and fire safety, providing access for the disabled, and upgrading restrooms. Bid opening for the $749,000 project is set for March 25.

The auditorium, which accommodates up to 1,300 people in portable seating, was built in 1950 in South Gate Park. It has been used for large-scale community and private events, including recreation classes, banquets, parties, the South Gate High School Christmas prom and the annual Azalea Festival reception.

“We have been trying to relocate most events, but some have had to be scaled down or not conducted,” said Dodie Mosby, city parks and recreation director.

James Biery, public works director, said that after structural work has been completed, auditorium acoustics will be improved in another project.
