The Long Goodbye (KCOP next Sunday at 1:30 a.m.) In this sly, elegant 1973 classic, Robert Altman dared to drop Raymond Chandler’s private eye Philip Marlowe into contemporary Los Angeles--and to turn him into a shaggy, sloppy, hangdog type (Elliott Gould, perfectly cast). Altman and writer Leigh Brackett have so much fun with Southern California archetypes that we’re in danger of overlooking the film’s serious moral undertones.
White Zombie (KDOC next Sunday at 3:30 a.m.). This is that creepy 1932 horror classic, set on a Haitian sugar plantation, in which Madge Bellamy keeps playing “Liebestraum” while in a trance for the pleasure of the evil Bela Lugosi.
