Now in his 16th season with the Matadors, Nelson faces the stiff challenge of giving respectability to a team that won only three games last season. He hopes part of the answer lies in the numbers. “We do have more people returning than we’ve had in quite a while,” Nelson said. Among them are all-league player Mitchell, who batted .403 with 20 runs batted in in 1991, and Troung, who batted .271 and stole 29 bases. John Baughman, who Nelson said is an excellent fielder, moves to shortstop from third. Lemmon, 6 feet 3 and 240 pounds, will handle most of the pitching. The right-hander was 0-5 last year but had a 2.50 earned-run average. “He has the ability to throw in the true mid-80s. If we can get some good defense behind him, he could help carry us a long way,” Nelson said. The coach is counting on Troung and speedster Kim to create problems for opponents on the basepaths. “We hope to steal a few runs,” Nelson said.
