Gulls Admit Interest in Lindros

The Gulls answered speculation Tuesday by acknowledging their interest in Eric Lindros, the first player selected in the 1991 NHL entry draft.

Don Waddell, Gulls vice president and general manager, confirmed the team has spoken with Lindros’ agent, Rick Curran, about a deal that would bring the 18-year-old center here. Waddell said Lindros, who has not signed with the NHL’s Quebec Nordiques, is eligible to play professionally with an unaffiliated minor league team.

Waddell said he has not spoken to Curran since October, but plans to reopen discussions regarding Lindros, who played earned a silver medal with the Canadian Olympic team.

“I’d love to have a guy like that play for us,” Waddell said. “To say there won’t be a phone call from my end at this point, I have to say there will be.”

Waddell said, however, that someone else in the organization has been in contact with Curran since October, and a club source said an agreement has been reached.

“All I can tell you is there have been a number of people who have made inquiries,” Curran said. “I’m really not in the position to comment on too much.”
