THOUSAND OAKS : School Boundaries Will Remain Same

Share

Despite enrollment imbalances, the boundaries between Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks high schools will stay the same, Conejo Valley school board members decided Thursday.

Some parents have said they are concerned because Thousand Oaks High now has more students than Newbury Park High. But in 10 years, officials project, the numbers of students enrolled at the two schools will move closer together.

Newbury Park High School has 1,480 students and Thousand Oaks High School has 2,199 students. But by the year 2002, enrollment at Newbury Park High School is expected to increase to 2,240 while Thousand Oaks High School population is projected to decrease to 2,138.

Parents have complained that Newbury Park High students cannot enroll in some courses that are offered at Thousand Oaks High. There are fewer course offerings and fewer class sections at Newbury Park than at the two other comprehensive high schools in the Conejo Valley Unified School District.

Fewer high school classes are being offered districtwide this year due to recent budget cuts, according to district officials.

School board members followed Supt. William Seaver’s recommendation to maintain the current boundaries to avoid disruption to students’ schedules.
