Mexico Exchange Program a ‘Junior Achievement’ for 3

Loara High School juniors Rebecca Montano and Urjita Parekh and sophomore John Chao (have been selected for a Junior Achievement of Southern California exchange program in Mexico. They will learn business practices in a cross-cultural setting.

The exchange will start July 3 with an orientation in Cocoyoc, Mexico.

After a weeklong conference in Mexico City, the Anaheim students will live with a host family for the completion of their five-week visit.

They will compare Junior Achievement programs in Mexico and Southern California. The threesome will also prepare a summary of local business conditions, including labor practices, government control and taxes.

Laguna Niguel resident Joseph M. Davis, a lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, graduated from the California Law Enforcement Command College in Pomona.

Davis, who was nominated for the special program by Sheriff Brad Gates, completed a comprehensive program of 364 hours of study as well as an independent study program on law enforcement.

He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Cal State Fullerton.

The command college is a two-year, future-oriented leadership development program sponsored by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

Fullerton residents Nancy Dawson and Guadalupe Valadez and Sunny Hills High School senior Louie Chang were honored by Soroptimist International of Fullerton at its recent awards luncheon.

Dawson was named winner of the group’s Annual Training Awards Program presented to women seeking to upgrade their economic status through education. Valadez was runner-up.

Louis was the recipient of the Youth Citizenship Award by demonstrating dependability, leadership and taking an active part in home, school and community.

Mitchell D. Boyer, Linda Taylor and Wayne E. Clair, all of Fullerton, and Robert K. Rost of Santa Ana were graduated as Fullerton College’s first four students in an Environmental Hazardous Materials Technology Certificate Program.

Irvine resident David Anthony, a 20-year Golden West College faculty member, has been named to a two-year term as the college’s fine arts division dean, and David Hudson of Costa Mesa has been named language arts division dean for a two-year term.

Leila Sigurdsson, 16, of Laguna Hills has returned from a recent weeklong National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, where she visited embassies, listened to prominent journalists at the National Press Club and met with government leaders.

The Laguna Hills High School student was one of 350 students from across the nation who were selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and citizenship. Theme of the conference was “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting With the Leaders of Today.”

Vilo Del Rio of Costa Mesa and Greg Harris of Huntington Beach distinguished themselves in the regional competition of the American College Theater Festival held recently in Fresno.

Both Orange Coast College students reached the semifinals and were two of 32 to attain that level. The competition attracted 300 theater students from community colleges and universities in the western United States.

James L. Doti, president of Chapman University, has been named 1992 Orange County Manager of the Year by the Orange Coast Chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management.

Santa Ana High School senior K. Edward Doyle will receive his Boy Scout Eagle rank at a Court of Honor Tuesday at Spurgeon United Methodist Church in Santa Ana. Doyle worked on a fence replacement and landscape project at the Santa Ana Zoo for his community service project.

Gary C. Smith, a Katella High School science teacher, and Rowena F. Hacker, a mathematics teacher at Trabuco Hills High in Mission Viejo, have been presented $2,500 awards as Tandy Technology Scholars, a program that recognizes academic excellence in mathematics, science and computer science.
