Four basketball players at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., and a former player bet on college sports, and some players allegedly collected debts for a college-centered gambling ring, state police said.
State Police Capt. Brian Andrews said the five had combined to wager as much as $54,000. He would not comment on whether the players were betting on their own team. Bryant College plays in Division II.
Police have not announced if charges have been made against the five.
University of Rhode Island president Robert Carothers said the school would begin an internal investigation of alleged gambling on campus.
Carothers said the university would start its probe because state police were not sharing evidence from their investigation.
He acknowledged rumors that some Rhode Island athletes may have been involved. But he said, “I do not believe that there is any credible evidence of any kind having to do with point shaving.”
