In the case of the Point Loma disposal pipe, officials believe that the breaks in the pipe were caused by a recent rash of heavy waves from an “unusual northwest angle,” that resultant strong ocean currents caused the heavy rock base that supports the pipe to collapse, which in turn caused it to sway and break. Hogwash!

Every year, the San Diego coastline gets battered by waves that are generated by large Alaskan storm systems. . . . Some years are worse than others. These big winter waves generally come from the west or northwest, and they are revered by local surfers. Although this year has been a banner year for big swells and larger-than-usual waves, I can remember many that have produced bigger surf.
