LOS ANGELES : Helen Hernandez to Make Bid for Roybal’s Seat

Public relations and marketing consultant Helen Hernandez said Monday she will enter the June 2 Democratic primary in the 30th Congressional District in an effort to succeed longtime Rep. Edward R. Roybal, who is retiring.

Hernandez, 44, said she is running to offer Los Angeles voters an alternative to others seeking the seat, including Los Angeles school board member Leticia Quezada and Assemblyman Xavier Becerra (D-Monterey Park). “It is time for a change,” she said. “We’ve allowed elected politicians to mark decisions for our community.”

A longtime political activist, Hernandez sits on the governing board of the National Council of La Raza, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the legal defense fund of the National Organization for Women.
