ORANGE : School Board OKs Volunteer Tutors
Trustees of the Orange Unified School District have unanimously approved a pilot program that will recruit volunteers to tutor students after school.
The program, which district officials hope to begin in April, will be set up at Esplanade Elementary, Yorba Middle and Villa Park High schools. The program will be re-evaluated in June, and if successful, it may be offered at schools throughout the district.
Officials hope to recruit retired teachers and other professionals with expertise who will each tutor two or three students during one session each week.
Trustees have praised the plan, which was proposed by new board member Robert Viviano.
“I’m just thrilled with it,” Trustee Maureen Aschoff said. “We can help our remedial students. We can help our enrichment students. We can help any student who wants help.”
