Police on Friday said they are looking for a rapist who has attacked 12 young girls and women since 1989 in Orange and San Bernardino counties, luring them by asking for their help in finding a lost pet.

Dubbed the Puppy Dog Rapist, he is thought to have approached a 9-year-old girl on Feb. 14 in Westminster, asking her to look at rabbits he claimed were between two houses. The girl was able to get away unharmed after a dog barked and the man panicked, said Westminster Police Detective Tom Green.

The attacks occurred in public areas, according to police.

The attacker’s victims have ranged in age from 9 to 67. He has struck four times in Huntington Beach, four times in Westminster, three times in the Santa Ana area and once in Big Bear in San Bernardino County, Green said.

He is described as being between 5-foot-10 and 6-foot-2, Green said. He is cleanshaven and muscular, with light brown hair cut close on the sides.

One of the women he raped in Westminster scratched him on his face, possibly giving him a small scar under his left eye, Green said.
