Former Prime Minister Menachem Begin’s health deteriorated Friday, a hospital official said.

Begin, 78, has been in Tel Aviv Ichilov Hospital’s intensive care unit since suffering a heart attack Tuesday.

Hospital director Dan Michaeli said Begin remained on a respirator and was heavily sedated. By Friday afternoon Begin was “less than stable because the (heart) muscle is weakening,” Michaeli said.

He also said Begin has been in critical condition for most of his hospital stay.

Doctors gave Begin a pacemaker Thursday to stop irregularities in his heartbeat.

Begin was prime minister from 1977 to 1983.
