OUTLOOK

For all intents and purposes, the Arrowhead League race is between La Sierra Academy and Calvary Chapel, last year’s top two finishers. At Southern California Christian, the Flames don’t figure to challenge for the championship, but should improve on last year’s last-place finish. “A .500 record is within reach,” said Felten, in his third year as coach. “We’ve got five starters back and our offense and defense are strong.” The left side of Southern California Christian’s infield will be especially strong, with Fetters and Nichols returning. Fetters hit .386 last year with 29 RBIs, while Nichols hit .368 with 27 RBI and two home runs. Fetters and Nichols, along with speedy outfielder Stitz (22 stolen bases last year) will give the Flames run production in the middle of the order. Southern California Christian lacks pitching experience, but Felten expects Mullins to improve steadily as the season progresses. “Our pitching will make us competitive by league,” Felten said. “We’ll rely on the middle of our lineup to score some runs.” Also back in the infield is Gaez, while newcomer Oyler will handle second base. Stitz and Marquez anchor the outfield. Calvary Chapel has a number of left-handed hitters, which could be trouble for the predominantly right-handed Flames.
