Don’t wring your hands about the sad...

Don’t wring your hands about the sad shape of the environment, kids. Do something about it.

That’s the message of the 12th annual Environmental Education Fair at the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum in Arcadia on Saturday. Insects, snakes, sea creatures, tropical birds and a variety of entertaining exhibits will be used to get the idea across not only to children but to folks of all ages, arboretum officials said.

Among the highlights:

* A 20-foot “trash dragon,” made of recycled plastics (milk bottles, trash bags, cups and the like), will wend through the grounds like a Chinese dragon.

* Chris Davis will put an assortment of trained tropical birds through their paces, such as walking up ladders and retrieving things, in a once-only noon performance.

* Yogi Bear’s Quakey-Shakey School House will provide a simulated earthquake, and Smokey Bear will teach forest safety tips.

But the real emphasis will be on action.

Heal the Bay will invite children to adopt a beach, the National Audubon Society will conduct bird walks and promote conservation, the Earth Summit Action Coalition-San Gabriel Valley will drum up support for saving the Brazilian rain forest, and various groups will giverecycling tips.

In all, about 60 exhibitors will present children with hands-on natural science projects, all for the price of the arboretum entrance fee--$3 for adults, $1.50 for senior citizens and 75 cents for children 5 to 12. Children under 5 are free.

The fair will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the arboretum, 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia. There will be free bus service from Santa Anita Fashion Park.
