SYLMAR : Plan OKd to Close Street to Cruisers
- Share via
The Los Angeles City Council has approved a plan allowing police to close part of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Sylmar to stop cruising along the busy thoroughfare on Sunday nights.
The 1 1/2-mile stretch of Laurel Canyon between Rinaldi and Paxton streets attracts hundreds of cruisers from throughout Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange counties, including some gang members.
The boulevard has been a popular cruising site for years, but several gang killings have occurred in the area during the past year, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Local residents also have complained about the heavy traffic and noise caused by the cruisers.
Under the plan the council approved Wednesday, Laurel Canyon Boulevard will be closed between Rinaldi and Paxton streets every week from 6 p.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday.
