Residents from throughout Orange County--including Carl N. Karcher and Marion Knott--have been honored by the Cypress College Foundation as part of the organization’s drive to raise scholarship funds.

The foundation’s annual Americana Awards banquet set records for both earnings and attendance, college officials recently announced.

Nearly $160,000 was raised for scholarships and student services, surpassing last year’s earnings by more than $50,000, said Don Bedard, foundation director, who added that 800 people attended the event, beating last year’s attendance by more than 200. “I am extremely pleased and gratified by our success,” Bedard said.

Karcher and Knott were honored as the countywide man and woman of the year at the event. In addition, citizens of the year from each of the seven cities that Cypress College serves were given special recognition.

They are Mary Anne Mang of Anaheim, Donna Bagley of Buena Park, Terry Hartshorn of Cypress, Diane Donovan of Garden Grove, Alta Duke of La Palma, Judy Klabouch of Los Alamitos and Lahoma Snyder of Stanton. The awards were presented by U.S. Sen. John Seymour (R-Calif.).

A majority of proceeds from the banquet will be used to provide scholarships and funds for needy students. The remaining funds will be used to purchase computers, fund a special job placement program for disabled students and provide financial assistance for students needing child care services.

Cypress College is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
