The long-awaited City Council approval of the transfer of the Sports Arena lease from Harry Cooper to developer Ron Hahn and his group was continued Monday until March 30. Hahn and his partners are out of town and requested the continuance.

The council agreement with Hahn is expected to include a memorandum of understanding that will bind Hahn and the council to cooperating on identifying a downtown site for a new arena.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State lost to No. 19 Duke, 5-2, in a nonconference match. Jeff Belloli and Steve Saba were the Aztec winners. Belloli defeated Willie Quest, 6-3, 6-2, and Saba got by Rob Principe, 6-3, 6-4. Both teams are 8-2.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Clemson, ranked 25th, upset No. 13 San Diego State, 6-3, at SDSU in a nonconference match. The Aztecs’ winners were: Sue Hawke (No. 2 singles) over Amy Young, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2; Sushelle Gulati (No. 3) over Shannon King, 7-5, 6-3; and Hawke and Nicole Storto (No. 1 doubles) over Mimi Burgos and Mindy Weiner, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. SDSU fell to 5-4. Clemson improved to 9-4.

GOLF

Dave Schnider of San Diego State took a three-stroke lead after the first of two rounds of the University of San Diego Invitational at Steele Canyon Golf Club. Schnider shot a two-under 69 and leads teammate John Lovett and Grand Canyon’s Chris Leckey--both of whom shot 72--heading into this morning’s final round.

Phil Isbell and Steve Brown of USD and Scott Reid of Grand Canyon are tied for fourth at 73.

Schnider, Lovett, Kevin Riley (74) and Matt Baugh (78) gave SDSU a 293 team score, seven strokes ahead of Grand Canyon.
