Maria Rodriguez, 25, was held Wednesday in connection with the poisoning death of her 3-month-old daughter, Griselda, San Diego police said.

Police were called to Rodriguez’s home on Webster Avenue about 6 a.m. March 10, after reports that a baby had stopped breathing, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Police and paramedics tried to revive the infant. She was taken to Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m., Robinson said.

The county medical examiner’s office said Griselda died of high blood levels of sodium, potassium and chlorine--or “salt poisoning,” Robinson said.

Police questioned Maria Rodriguez and the child’s father, Filimon Bustos, 24, of 51st Street, before taking her into custody Wednesday, Robinson said.

He said the couple, who live separately, have four other children ranging in age from 1 to 7. The children have been placed in the custody of relatives.
