LOS ANGELES : Walters Calls for Probe of Metro Rail Safeguards

Share

City Councilwoman Rita Walters, seeking answers to questions about methane infiltration in the Metro Red Line subway tunnels, Friday called for an investigation by transit and fire officials of the safety measures being taken on the $1.45-billion construction project.

Among Walters’ concerns is the efficiency of a high-density polyethylene liner wrapped around the tunnels and stations in an attempt to keep underground methane gas, which is potentially explosive, from seeping into tunnels.

“But questions have been raised about this lining and many water leaks have already been found,” Walters said. “I want to be sure that the condition does not lead to delays in opening the Red Line or even worse, perhaps a disaster downtown in the future.”

Walters’ motion is scheduled to be taken up by the full council next week.
