Legion Members Spruce Up Cemetery

Share

The idea came to Daniel Zepeda Jr., a security officer at Southern California Edison’s Alhambra complex, as he read a January article in The Times about the sorry state of some national cemeteries.

Zepeda, 38, a new member of American Legion Post 431 in Rosemead, realized that he and other veterans had something to offer. So the former Marine got together a dozen members of Post 431 and volunteered to help spruce up the grounds of the Riverside National Cemetery.

Their services will include staining a wooden shelter used for funerals and trimming plants.

“When I saw the picture (of the cemetery in disrepair) I said, ‘Hey, man. . . . Things need to be done,’ ” Zepeda said. “We’re all going to wind up at someplace like that.”
