COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nevin, Powell Lead Fullerton Past Ohio State
Phil Nevin hit his 13th home run of the season, and Dante Powell had three hits to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 6-4 victory over Ohio State in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Amerige Park.
Nevin homered in the fourth inning, and Powell hit an RBI triple, his sixth of the season, to put the Titans (20-7) ahead, 6-4.
Ohio State (11-9) threatened in the top of the eighth, but Fullerton’s Paco Chavez entered the game with one out and runners on first and second and retired five of the last six hitters to record his first save.
In other nonconference baseball:
UC Irvine 9, Utah 3--Jeff Heath pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits while striking out five and walking one for host Irvine. Corey Parker and Dave Dieter each had two hits and two RBIs for Irvine (14-9). Utah is 5-16.
In nonconference softball:
Cal State Fullerton 1, Western Illinois 0--Rose Garces doubled and scored in the second inning for host Fullerton. Tiffany Boyd earned the victory, pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Cheryl Longeway.
Cal State Fullerton 2, Oregon 0--Boyd pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts for the ninth-ranked Titans. Leadoff hitter Denise DeWalt scored both runs for host Fullerton (17-11).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 7, Colorado 2--Biljana Korac won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, for host Irvine (11-4), which won its seventh consecutive match.
