Rains Expected to Hit Hardest in Southern San Diego County

The storm forecasters thought would slam into the Los Angeles area has instead dipped south and is making a beeline toward southern San Diego County, forecasters said Wednesday.

Still, the National Weather Service forecast a 60% chance of rain with scattered thundershowers for the Los Angeles area today.

“It looks like the most likely place of landfall for the brunt of the storm will be extreme Southern California, especially the southern deserts, and Arizona,” said Rick Dittmann, a meteor-logist with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts for The Times.

“This is still a significant storm--pretty vigorous still,” Dittmann said. But its turn south is “good news for Los Angeles proper because the ground is pretty saturated, and it could have done significant damage,” he said.

Light showers fell over Southern California on Wednesday from Mt. Wilson to Riverside and Palm Springs.
