Let me be among the first to wish you a pleasant Academy Awards night, coming up on Monday.

If you’re looking for ways to celebrate, you may want to check out the action at Charley Brown’s restaurant in Ventura. For the second year, executive manager Peter Solomon is taking on the added responsibility of putting on a rather elaborate Oscar promotion. It’s being co-sponsored by radio station KBBY, the Carriage Square Theater of Oxnard and the Video Super Shops.

In this promotion, guests can win prizes by correctly selecting best picture, best actor/actress, best supporting actor/actress or best director. To get participants in the mood, the restaurant will be “decorated to the max,” Solomon said. He said to expect plenty of movie posters, balloons and popcorn.

The Academy Awards theme will make its way onto the dinner menu and drink lists as well. There will be the “Silence of the Seafood Assortment” (were you expecting a lamb dish?), the “Bugsy Bacon Cheddar Skins” and the “Terminator Tea II” (a Long Beach Iced Tea).

For those who would like some advice on which nominees to pick for the various Oscars, here’s what Solomon thinks: “I predict ‘Beauty and the Beast’ has a good chance at winning best picture. I think best director might be Oliver Stone (for ‘JFK’),” he said. “And I would love to see Bette Midler win (for best actress for her performance in ‘For the Boys’).”

Speaking of the Academy Awards, here’s a film whose absence from the list of Oscar nominees probably surprised some people. The Ojai Film Society will show “Paris Is Burning” on Sunday at the Ojai Playhouse. It’s a documentary on the drag-queen balls of Harlem and the gay Latino and black men who attend them.

The movie won the 1990 Los Angeles Film Critics award and a Sundance Festival grand jury prize in the documentary category. Show time is 4:30 p.m. The playhouse is at 145 E. Ojai Ave., Admission is $6.
